Gelato Di Carlotta Competes at the 2017 World Gelato Festival
NIAGARA NATIVE CARLOTTA CATTANI WINS SECOND RUNNER UP, NO. 3 SPOT IN WORLD GELATO FESTIVAL AMERICA 2017
After the technical jury released their results Sunday (Oct.1) night, an ecstatic Carlotta Cattani, President and Director of Production and flavour development of St. Catharines-based Il Gelato di Carlotta Inc.said: “I couldn't believe my ears when the judges announced the results.”
“This is the first time I have entered such a competition and on a world stage and competed against professionals who have participated several times.”
Carlotta was at the three-day competition in Boulder, Colorado, assisted by Lolita Giannelli, the supervising manager for the four Canadian Il Gelato outlets — two in Niagara-on-the-Lake, one at the Fallsview Casino in Niagara Falls, and one at the Vaughan Mills shopping Mall just north of Toronto. There also is an outlet in Florence, Italy.
Carlotta, a resident of Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Canada, entered with the company's best selling flavour, Dolce Carlotta, which is a recreation in gelato form of her favourite custard from her childhood days in Florence and Tuscany.
To this she added a hazelnut paste made with real hazelnuts from the Piedmonte region in Italy, and chocolate, sprinkling it with quinoa and chia caramelized with Canadian maple syrup and coated with dark chocolate. The participants were required to make 180 litres of their entry on site — 60 litres a day, and serve it to ticket holding visitors.
Il Gelato di Carlotta Inc. is a family-owned company based in St. Catharines, with two Canadian partners and two from Florence, Italy. It started operations in 2013 in Niagara-on-the-Lake and has since expanded to four locations. It offers a full array of gelato products, including gelato cakes and pastries. It is planning to launch a franchise operation in 2018.
