From Concept to Reality

gelato-di-carlotta-biz-cardIl Gelato di Carlotta was born at Badiani, the most well known gelateria in Florence, Italy, which is way off the beaten tourist path. Present at the gathering were the four current partners and they were, of course, eating gelato.

There was Carlotta Cattani, a Florentine, her husband Zuhair (Kash) Kashmeri, both of Niagara-on-the-Lake and owners of the top rated Tuscan B&B, La Toscana di Carlotta at Burns House (C. 1818). Then there were Carlotta’s two brothers, Simone and Filippo Cattani, local businessmen who wanted to re-create a gelato business that the mother’s side of the family had operated several generations ago.

That meeting at Badiani was in November 2012. On June 15, 2013, Il Gelato di Carlotta opened its doors at 59 Queen Street in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Canada. On June 15, 2015, we opened a second location at the Fallsview Casino in Niagara Falls. The first question that several customers ask is this: How did you manage to make it look so so so European?

Here’s how, and this is our model for all our stores: A designer from a company near Perugia, Italy flew over to measure every nook-and-cranny of the store. A few months later, a 40-foot container arrived with the entire store, and everything to go with it inside. Two technicians assembled it and Il Gelato di Carlotta was a European reality in Canada’s first capital. Ditto for our outlet and outdoor patio at the Fallsview Casino in Niagara Falls.

The rest is history. We are overwhelmed at the response of the thousands of tourists who streamed in to the store, the locals who return time and again, and those who continue to buy our gelato cakes and pastries regardless of the temperature outside. Thanks to you, Il Gelato di Carlotta reached a top rated position on TripAdvisor before we celebrated our first birthday!

Ciao! A Presto! See you soon!
